About the Artist
Betty Carlson was born and raised in Louisville,
Ohio. After college, she and her husband moved to Casper, Wyoming.
While there she was fortunate to meet and study under Rupert Conrad
whose enthusiasm and encouragement has had a lasting effect on
her work. Then, during an extended stay in Denver, Colorado, Betty
continued her art education at the Rocky Mountain School of Art
and Denver University. She also participated in various workshops
conducted by noted artists such as Sylvia Sleigh, Marisol Escobar
and Mel Ramos.
After moving to Santa Fe in 1991, Betty was
so influenced by the beauty of the area that she focused much
of her work on Southwest subject matter. The sculpture-like adobe
architecture, extraordinary lighting and brilliant sunsets, and
rose-colored earthen tones are repeated themes in her work. She
also enjoyed recording her impressions of the women and children
of the nearby pueblos. Her recent move to Colorado Springs has opened up new avenues to explore - mountain vistas, aspen-covered hillsides, forests, lakes.
Carlson's desire to learn and create has taken
her on a quest for a means of expressing her emotional and intuitive
feelings. To that end, over the years, she has explored different
styles of painting using a variety of media. After using oil paints
for many years, Betty ventured into painting with acrylics and
watercolors and was awarded a Signature Membership in the National
Watercolor Society. Betty has published serigraphs, lithographs,
giclees and posters of her paintings. She was commissioned to
create 17 paintings for the book "Santa
Fe Memories".
